How Would Pochettino Set Up Newcastle United | Starting XI, Formation & Transfers. Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with moves to Real Madrid, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and many of Europe’s big names. There’s already top managers who have been linked with the job at Newcastle United with the prospective big money takeover there, but without a doubt Poch is the biggest name on the managerial market and Newcastle could make a huge statement if they bring him in.

Let’s have a look at how Mauricio Pochettino should spend in the transfer market. Starting off in goal, Martin Dubravka could be enough to start off with – he’s kept Newcastle in many games in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons and Mauricio Pochettino would probably want to prioritize other areas of the pitch.

Ahead of the goalkeeper we’ll be looking into two defensive signings. Current club captain Jamaal Lascelles has been impressive at the heart of the Newcastle defence, so you’d expect him to keep his place, as well as Dutch left-back Jetro Willems who has bags of experience. The obvious signing in defence would be Kalidou Koulibaly, he’s arguably the only true world class centre back that’s available right now and at 28, has probably got another four seasons at his peak so the reported 80 million euro move could be good value.

Moving further up the pitch, Boubakary Soumare was Newcastle number one target when Nabil Bentaleb was signed on loan in January, with reports that the player wanted to stay in Lille for the time being. However with new financial backing and Mauricio Pochettino at the helm, Soumare could change his mind. Soumare is an excellent prospect. At just 20 years old, he can struggle with decision making but this will improve with age and experience, especially if he’s partnered with a more mature defensive midfielder.

In terms of players already at the club, Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almirón are the two that could fill the Inside Forward or Inverted Winger and Second Striker roles. I also think under Pochettino, who encourages the front four to be in close proximity to one another, Joelinton could prove more effective as a deep-lying forward rather than an out and out target man like Steve Bruce has used him this season. But I’d be looking for a replacement for the striker or at least competition if he can’t get back to his Hoffenheim form. The first name that comes to mind is Edinson Cavani. Like with PSG teammate Meunier, Cavani’s contract expires in the summer and would be a low cost way to add a few more goals and star power to Newcastle United. However I don’t see Cavani being a hit in the Premier League like Ibrahimovic was for Manchester United, plus with the huge wages he would probably expect, Cavani would be better for PR than football.

A high risk, high reward alternative would be Alfredo Morales. Whilst the Colombian had a barren run of seven games without a goal before the season was halted, his xG for those games suggests he should have scored four goals. Now considering his previously impressive goalscoring return, you can assume, with some confidence, that he’ll return to form. Morelos is also apparently on the market, just not “on the cheap” as Rangers Sporting Director, Ross Wilson put it.
